The Hugh Wooding Law School Orientation Manual 2014

The SRC is pleased to introduce, for the 2014-2015 academic year, your very own HWLS Orientation Manual. This manual (attached) constitutes a substantial update to the 2012 Orientation Manual which has been since lauded by students and staff members alike for the wealth of valuable information related to HWLS student life contained within.

The 2014-2015 Orientation Manual is updated in almost every respect and continues to offer valuable content on nearly everything a first year student should know, including the contact details of trusted taxi drivers, the locations of nearby shops and financial institutions, upcoming school competitions and events, getting around and personal safety advice, to name a few.

The Orientation Manual can also be used in conjunction with our new blog (hwlslife.blogspot.com) and it is hoped that they will both serve as trusted sources of accurate and helpful information for students!

Constitutional Amendments

The new SRC Constitution entered into force in 2014. It replaced the older Constitution which had existed since 1993. Updating the original Constitution was considered to be a priority by 2014, after several failed attempts by successive SRC Constitutional Chairpersons over the years to amend it. And it was only under the leadership of Ms. Alaira Murphy (SRC Constitutional Chairperson 2013-2014) that a person-to-person referendum was held in 2014 and the requisite number of votes cast to allow the Constitution to be duly amended in accordance with its provisions.

While the SRC 2014-2015 believes that the new Constitution is a welcome update on the original, there are still a few minor ‘tweaks’ that the  SRC is desirous of making, such as expressly codifying, and providing for, the ability of the SRC Chairpersons to form their own Committees - a practice which has always existed by convention.

These amendments were proposed by the incumbent Constitutional Chairperson, Mr. Josiah Soo-Hon. And the SRC 2014-2015, being an inclusive organization with an appreciation of the benefits of consultative democracy, is inviting all students to its AGM on 23rd September, 2014 to discuss the benefits of making these amendments before proceeding to amend the 2014 Constitution under the new, simplified amendment procedure contained therein.

Attached is the Original 1993 Constitution (for completeness) along with a draft of the 2014 Constitution with some of the desired amendments in red.
